The Department of Chemistry has commenced the Sixth Regional Hands-on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Training Workshop, bringing together scientists from across Africa for advanced training in one of the world's most powerful analytical techniques used in scientific research.
The five-day workshop, running from 20 to 24 July 2026, is hosted by the Department of Chemistry under the Faculty of Science and Technology through the Kenya National Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Centre (KNMRC
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) Prof. Mande said the University remains committed to strengthening research, innovation and regional scientific collaboration through capacity-building initiatives that equip researchers with practical skills and foster knowledge exchange.
He encouraged participants to apply the expertise gained during the training to build multidisciplinary research teams, strengthen partnerships across institutions and pursue research that addresses pressing challenges in health, agriculture, industry and other sectors. He noted that collaborations established through such programmes have the potential to generate innovations with meaningful national and regional impact.
The workshop continues a growing tradition of regional capacity building through the Kenya National Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Centre. Since its inception, the programme has trained scientists from universities and research institutions across East and Central Africa, contributing to the development of a strong network of researchers with expertise in NMR spectroscopy.
Throughout the 20–24 July programme, participants are taking part in lectures, laboratory demonstrations and intensive hands-on practical sessions covering modern NMR techniques and their applications. The training provides practical experience in spectral interpretation, data processing and advanced analytical methods used in chemistry, natural products research, drug discovery and related scientific fields.
The workshop is supported through collaborations with the National Research Fund (Kenya), the Royal Society of Chemistry and other partners, reflecting the importance of strategic partnerships in advancing scientific research and innovation.
By hosting the regional training, the University of Nairobi continues to strengthen its position as a leading centre for scientific research, advanced training and innovation in Africa while creating opportunities for collaboration that extend beyond national borders.
